  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • Zest of an orange, divided
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 3 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • Cinnamon for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare a muffin pan with liners.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, sea salt, and spices.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and dark brown sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time along with vanilla and orange extracts.
  4. Mix in sour cream and half of the dry ingredients followed by milk; then add remaining dry ingredients until just combined.
  5. Fill each liner two-thirds full and bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely before frosting.
  6. In another large bowl, beat room temperature butter until creamy. Then blend in cream cheese until smooth. Add vanilla and orange extracts along with salt and around one teaspoon of orange zest before gradually mixing in confectioner’s sugar until silky smooth.
  7. Using either a knife or pastry bag fitted with a tip, spread or pipe frosting onto each cooled cupcake. Sprinkle ground cinnamon over each cupcake.
