Ingredients

Scale
  • 2.53 cups white whole wheat or all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet instant yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup warm water or warm milk
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 7 tablespoons salted butter, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese at room temperature (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine warm water (or milk), honey, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. Gradually add flour and salt, kneading until smooth.
  2. Let it Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
  3. Make the Filling: Mix softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon until well combined.
  4. Shape the Knots: Roll out dough into a rectangle; spread filling evenly and cut into strips. Tie each strip into a knot.
  5. Bake: Arrange knots on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let them rise briefly while preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for around 20 minutes until golden brown.
