Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large Honeycrisp apples
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar
  • 4 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 packets instant dry yeast
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 6 Tbsp unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup cream cheese
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling: Peel and dice the apples. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat and add brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, water, and cornstarch. Stir until thickened and set aside.
  2. Make the Dough: In a bowl or stand mixer, combine flour, yeast, and salt. Mix warmed milk with applesauce or eggs and sugar. Gradually add to dry ingredients until dough forms; knead until smooth.
  3. Let It Rise: Place dough in a greased bowl and cover. Allow it to rise in a warm spot until doubled in size (about an hour).
  4. Roll Out & Assemble: Roll out dough into a rectangle, spread softened butter over it, then top with caramel filling. Roll tightly and slice into pieces.
  5. Second Rise: Place rolls cut-side up in a greased pan; cover and let them rise again for about half an hour.
  6. Bake & Frost: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for approximately 30 minutes until golden brown. Prepare frosting while cooling slightly; frost warm rolls before serving.
